In the first of a series of interviews leading up to the Winter Olympics, starting on February 9, The Snow Gauge chats to moguls skier Matt Graham and talks about his rivalry with Canadian great Mikael Kingsbury.

Just how do you dethrone the king?
It’s a question that has been on the mind of Australian moguls champion Matt Graham for some time.
While Graham will head to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February as one his country’s best medal prospects, there’s royalty in his way.
It comes in the form of Canadian Mikael Kingsbury, a six-time World Cup champion who, quite simply, is the best the sport has seen.

In the end Australia’s two best winter athletes just couldn’t be separated.
So it seemed only fitting that moguls skier Britt Cox and halfpipe snowboarder Scotty James shared the Australian Snowsports Athlete of the Year Award.
A water ramp facility in Lennox Head may see the return of four-time Winter Olympian Lydia Lassila
- A final decision will be handed down on the proposed Lennox Head water ramp facility at the NSW state budget on June 21
- The facility would be a first in Australia and allow athletes to spend a significant portion of their year training domestically
- The new pool would and certain facilities would be available for public use
- It has potential to pave the way for the return of an on-snow aerials site at Mt Buller and a World Cup round.
It’s been almost a decade at the discussion table in one form or another but there’s cause for optimism that a new water jump facility for Australian winter athletes will be approved to be built at Lennox Head, this month.
The $10 million facility on the NSW north coast is thought to be earmarked for approval when the state budget is handed down on June 21.
Weights aren’t just for pro athletes, vain posers and muscle heads. If you want to ski and snowboard better you should add some lifting into your exercise routine.
Three-time Australian Winter Olympian (alpine/ski cross) and X-Games medallist Jenny Lyons (nee Owens) takes us through the key weights exercises you should be doing to get Winter Fit.
- Doing proper chin-ups
- Why leg-curl machines should largely be avoided
- Bench pressing – not so much for the ladies
- Calf work: ignore at your peril!
As a recreational skier or snowboarder it can be pretty easy to ignore the weights-room. A little stretching, some time on the stationary bike; the odd class – she’ll be right mate!
But this recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald revealed a lot. A study of nearly 200,000 Australians showed 90 per cent of them don’t do enough weight training – that is two times a week. And this is despite 60 per cent of Aussies saying they are in to some form of exercise.

After a breakthrough season in which he took out his first World Cup event and finished second overall in the World Cup, Matt Graham has won the 2016 Ski and Snowboard Australia Athlete of the Year award.
Graham, who came seventh at the Sochi Winter Olympics, will be one of the names to watch at Pyeongchang in February 2018.
