In the end Australia’s two best winter athletes just couldn’t be separated.

Lydia Lassila

A water ramp facility in Lennox Head may see the return of four-time Winter Olympian Lydia Lassila

Key points:

  • A final decision will be handed down on the proposed Lennox Head water ramp facility at the NSW state budget on June 21
  • The facility would be a first in Australia and allow athletes to spend a significant portion of their year training domestically
  • The new pool would and certain facilities would be available for public use
  • It has potential to pave the way for the return of an on-snow aerials site at Mt Buller and a World Cup round.

It’s been almost a decade at the discussion table in one form or another but there’s cause for optimism that a new water jump facility for Australian winter athletes will be approved to be built at Lennox Head, this month.

The $10 million facility on the NSW north coast is thought to be earmarked for approval when the state budget is handed down on June 21.

Why you should be lifting weights

 Jenny Owens

Weights aren’t just for pro athletes, vain posers and muscle heads. If you want to ski and snowboard better you should add some lifting into your exercise routine.

Three-time Australian Winter Olympian (alpine/ski cross) and X-Games medallist Jenny Lyons  (nee Owens) takes us through the key weights exercises you should be doing to get Winter Fit.

Key points:

  • Doing proper chin-ups
  • Why leg-curl machines should largely be avoided
  • Bench pressing – not so much for the ladies
  • Calf work: ignore at your peril!

As a recreational skier or snowboarder it can be pretty easy to ignore the weights-room. A little stretching, some time on the stationary bike; the odd class – she’ll be right mate!

But this recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald revealed a lot. A study of nearly 200,000 Australians showed 90 per cent of them don’t do enough weight training – that is two times a week. And this is despite 60 per cent of Aussies saying they are in to some form of exercise.

Breakthrough win … Matt Graham took out the Deer Valley World Cup moguls event last month. Pic: OWIA/Andrew Pattison

  • Matt Graham won his first World Cup moguls event at Deer Valley this season
  • He has 5 World Cup podium finishes
  • As a 19 year-old he was 7th in Sochi
  • Graham is still good mates with Dale Begg-Smith, chatting often a few times a week with the Olympic gold and silver medallist about his technique.

As far as preparation for the 2015/16 winter went, Matt Graham’s couldn’t get much worse.

In a sport known for mangling meniscuses Graham instead decided it’d be more fun to injure himself falling off a fence a little over a metre high while collecting a volleyball in Park City, Utah back in June.
