Yiddish songs don't come more beloved than this Yiddish classic, composed by Mark Warshawsky. Many consider it a Yiddish folk song. If so, it is one of the most popular Yiddish folk songs. It is sung here by Marc Berman.

The lovely Jewish song featured in this video describes a kheder (Hebrew school) teacher drilling his young students in the Hebrew alphabet. The teacher tries to explain to the children the deeper meaning of the letters, in relation to the oppression that they all will likely have to suffer. The same lesson might have been taught during any number of tragic periods in Jewish history. Indeed, Warshawsky (1840-1907), a lawyer, folk poet and songwriter, himself lived under brutal Czarist rule.
